Fourth floor of the Landmark hotel, and the most recent of the twelve. A cypress dry sauna, a glass steam room and a hot pool hall — plainly built and very well finished.

Because it opened most recently, it is also the cleanest — the wood has not darkened, the grout is still white, and the hall does not smell of anything. If you have been put off by the older houses, start here.

Inside

Cypress throughout the dry room — the smell of the wood reaches you before the heat does.
The glass steam room, so you can see the hall while you sit — the newest room of the twelve.
The hot-pool hall. Plainly built, very well finished — nothing here is trying to impress you.
Lattice screens and red lanterns down the corridor — the one place the newest house allows itself some theatre.
Lockers and robes. You arrive with a passport and nothing else; everything from here is provided.
A treatment room off the corridor — quiet, and far enough from the pool hall that you stop hearing it.
The corridor at night. New building, so the ceilings are higher than the older houses on the peninsula.
Reception. Fourth floor of the Landmark, and open around the clock — arriving at four in the morning is ordinary here.
The dining lounge: wooden lattice screens with a round moon gate, lanterns on the tables, and a dark-tiled pool beyond.

How a Macau sauna works

01 Arrive and check in Bring your passport. You get a locker key and a robe; towels and amenities are provided, so come empty-handed.
02 The baths Start in the water. Pools, steam and a dry sauna — the arrangement differs house to house, and one or two have a signature bath worth planning around.
03 The lounge Afterwards, a reclining lounge. Most houses include food and drink here, and it is where people spend the longest.
04 Add what you want Massage and spa courses are optional, chosen on the night. Nobody rushes the decision.
05 Settle up and go You pay the house on the way out, and it is the figure you were told before you left. Several houses let you rest until morning.
