On the tenth floor of the Emperor hotel. Not the biggest, and not trying to be — the pleasure here is in how carefully it is put together, down to the pool hall and the Japanese-style rooms.

Small enough that you see all of it, and finished well enough that you notice. It shuts at four and opens at noon, which makes it the one house on the list you can go to in the afternoon.

Inside

A corridor on the tenth floor of the Grand Emperor. Small footprint, so nothing is far from anything.
The dining lounge. Compact, and finished to a standard the bigger houses do not always match.
The dressing vanity. Opens at noon — the earliest door of the twelve.
Lockers. Excellent closes at four, so this is a house for the evening, not for sleeping through.
Lounge seating. Fewer chairs than the big houses, and correspondingly quieter.
A treatment room. Tenth floor, so the street noise never reaches it.
The pool hall under blue light. Excellent is the smallest house on the list and spends everything it has on rooms like this.
A Japanese-style private room — Excellent's signature, and the reason regulars keep the address to themselves.
The bedroom: a tufted leather headboard, wooden blinds on the window, a marble floor, and towels set on the window ledge.

How a Macau sauna works

01 Arrive and check in Bring your passport. You get a locker key and a robe; towels and amenities are provided, so come empty-handed.
02 The baths Start in the water. Pools, steam and a dry sauna — the arrangement differs house to house, and one or two have a signature bath worth planning around.
03 The lounge Afterwards, a reclining lounge. Most houses include food and drink here, and it is where people spend the longest.
04 Add what you want Massage and spa courses are optional, chosen on the night. Nobody rushes the decision.
05 Settle up and go You pay the house on the way out, and it is the figure you were told before you left. Several houses let you rest until morning.
